2008 1K Challenge Recipients

YouthWorks is funding up to $1,000 for these student-led ministry initiatives that help to meet a need in their home communities.

Bethany Presbyterian Church, Loves Park, IL - The Holy Helpers will be assisting in general household chores and repairs for the elderly members of their congregation. In addition to helping with the chores, the Holy Helpers will also be visiting and building relationships with those that they serve.

Bethany Reformed Church, Sheboygan, WI - Development of a "Family Fun Night" targeted and geared toward single-parent families in Sheboygan. The "Family Fun Night" will be offered on the first Sunday evening of each month. The youth group members will partner with the children for the evening, allowing the caregivers in these homes and opportunity to take a break.

Springfield First United Methodist Church, Springfield, NE - The Warm Hearts campaign will provide people with firewood to heat their homes during the winter. The youth will deliver the firewood to homes, build relationships with the people they serve, and invite them to attend worship services at the church.

Port William UMC, Port William, OH - Development and construction of a playground in Port William. Currently the town of Port William is without a playground or any recreational area. The youth group is going to use the new playground/park as a place to reach out in the name of Jesus to the children of Port William.

Christ UMC, L.I.F.E, Weaverville, NC- L.I.F.E. youth group has a heart for the people in their community who are just above the poverty level and cannot get government or local assistance and struggle to provide adequately for their families. The youth group will gather food and basic necessities and distribute them each month to these families.

Elements Youth Group of Lakeside Chapel and Retreat Center, Ludington, MI- Elements youth group is going to plant a community garden. The garden will provide fresh vegetables that the youth will distribute to those in need in the community. In addition to providing food, the garden will also serve as a place to rest, reflect and pray.

First Christian Reformed Church, Montreal, Quebec - The youth group is going to partner with an existing ministry in the area in the creation of a Kid's Club. The Kid's Club will be a mixture of Bible story telling, crafts, games and singing. The program will be geared to allow the youth group to spend time with the children to build relationships with them and show them the love of Christ.

First Lutheran Church, Lodi, WI- The mission of Loads of Love (L.O.L.) is to launder clothes for any individual or family unable to provide clean clothes for themselves or their family due to disability, physical limitation or other extenuating circumstances. Loads of Love members will also be spending time and building relationships with the people that they serve through this ministry.

Freedom Church, Cary, NC - The youth group will be involved with three families in the community who are in need. The youth will provide groceries, tutor/mentor the children, build relationships and share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with them.

iServe, New Bern, NC - iServe brings together youth from churches in New Bern once a month to do service projects at different worksites around the city. iServe will now be expanding to work on construction projects, and will be providing recreation days for Burmese refugee children in the area.
