Map of Youth Mission Trips

  Chattanooga

Grades: 7 to 9

Nicknamed the “Scenic City,” Chattanooga is a southern gem that offers the best of nature’s beauty and adventure. The beautiful landscape, marked by the Tennessee River and surrounding highlands, offers hang gliding, hiking, mountain biking and more. The city has received national praise for its riverfront redevelopment and its affordable housing program. Your junior-high group can help in the continued revitalization efforts through home repair; and shine the light of Jesus as you visit the elderly and participate in children’s ministries.

Demographics

From Civil War battlefields to the world’s largest freshwater aquarium, there are plenty of things to see and do in Chattanooga. The city is located in southeast Tennessee, near the Georgia border. It is the fourth-largest city in Tennessee with a population of 169,884. The name “Chattanooga” comes from the Creek Indian word for “rock coming to a point”—a reference to Lookout Mountain. The racial makeup of Chattanooga is primarily white (59 percent), African-American (36 percent) and Asian (1.6 percent). The diverse city is pleased to draw many visitors to the African American Museum and other cultural and historical landmarks. Manufacturing and service are the major industries for employment here. While the city has put much effort into revitalizing the riverfront and taking advantage of its natural beauty, there are regions and people in the city that still need a touch from willing volunteers. You can do much to serve the poor and improve deteriorating housing in Chattanooga.

About the Ministry

Participants serve in a variety of ways during a YouthWorks mission trip. Students may spend all week at one ministry or switch between ministries during the week. Our goal is to partner with local organizations and programs that seek to address the very basic needs of residents. Students may serve at places like: Children’s Programs, Elderly Centers, Soup Kitchens/Homeless Shelters and Thrift Stores. We cannot confirm until all groups arrive exactly what ministries your students will be a part of during the week. We ask that you come with a willing and flexible spirit!

Activities

Evening activities during a YouthWorks week are designed to give participants insight into the lives of local residents and the culture of the area. A list of evening/cultural activities we have done in the past include: visit famous Rock City & Lookout Mountain; visit Coolidge Park; attend a local church service; and community cookout. These are examples of what your group might partake in during your mission week. These examples are subject to change due to weather or availability. In case of change, suitable substitutes will be provided. We try to arrange for free evening activities, but from time to time, an additional cost may be required for an activity. Please plan to bring an additional $10 per person to cover any extra costs. We will confirm the details closer to your trip.
